Our Process
Every business undertakes development work in a different way. Rather than applying a standardised approach, we seek to develop a tailored process for each client that reflects the nature of their projects, documentation, stakeholders and commercial environment.
The objective is to achieve an appropriate balance of robustness, pragmatism and proportionality while maintaining a strong evidential foundation.
01.
Initial Scoping
We begin by developing an understanding of the business, its activities and the information available to support the claim.
This includes reviewing existing documentation, understanding the company's projects and cost base at a high level, identifying key stakeholders, discussing timescales, and agreeing a tailored approach to the engagement.
02.
Technical Assessment
We work with the individuals most closely involved in the company's development activities to identify and assess projects against the relevant DSIT guidelines.
The focus is on understanding the scientific or technological advances sought, the uncertainties encountered, and the work undertaken to resolve them.
03.
Cost Analysis
Relevant costs are collated, analysed and assessed against the applicable legislation and guidance.
Throughout this process, technical and financial information are considered together to help ensure that qualifying expenditure remains appropriately linked to the underlying R&D activities and receives the appropriate tax treatment.
04.
Technical Narratives
Detailed discussions are held with key technical personnel to develop an understanding of representative projects and activities.
These discussions inform the preparation of technical narratives that explain the advances sought, uncertainties encountered and work undertaken. Draft narratives are provided to the company for review and approval.
05.
Documentation
The work performed throughout the engagement is integrated into a structured R&D claim report, including details of the methodology applied and the basis upon which the claim has been prepared.
A supporting transmittal letter is also provided, setting out key assumptions, observations, risks and recommendations. The resulting documentation can then be used by the company and its professional advisors as part of the claim submission process.
